U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, accepted the Senator Jennings Randolph Lifetime Achievement Award from the Washington, D.C. Coal Club on Wednesday evening. The award recognizes Chairman Capito’s long record of support for the coal industry and her efforts to protect coal’s role as a reliable and affordable U.S. energy resource.
“At home in West Virginia we understand the role coal plays in our identity and our economy,” Chairman Capito said. “West Virginia energy has been used to fortify our country, connect our country with railroads, bridges and highways, and provide access to reliable electricity. That work is something to be proud of and something we must continue to invest in.”
Capito noted that supporting coal and coal workers has been a top priority throughout her time in Washington. She pointed to founding the Congressional Coal Caucus while in the House and her continued work on legislation and initiatives that back coal. As chairman of the EPW Committee, she said she will keep defending American coal and the role it plays in national security and prosperity.
The Washington, D.C. Coal Club presents the Senator Jennings Randolph Lifetime Achievement Award to leaders who have demonstrated sustained commitment to the coal industry. The award recognizes achievements that promote coal’s use, economic importance, and the welfare of coal communities.
