WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) announced $525,000 in federal funding for a construction project at Mercer County Airport in Bluefield. The funding will be used for a necessary taxiway that will enhance the safety of airfield operations and ensure that the airport meets specific design standards.

“Investing in West Virginia’s airport infrastructure is critical to the safety of our pilots and passengers who benefit from the services provided by the Mercer County Airport,” Senator Manchin said.  “By building an upgraded taxiway, this funding will help prevent avoidable accidents and injuries while also laying the foundation for economic growth and prosperity. I am pleased that these funds will help make sure our airports and runways remain safe for all West Virginians and our visitors.”

“Addressing our country's crumbling infrastructure is an area that can bridge the partisan divide and further economic growth,” said Senator Capito.  “West Virginians rely on our airports and other transportation systems to access hard to reach areas in the state and to transport necessary goods and services.  The new taxiway at Mercer County Airport that will be funded by this grant will enhance safety for West Virginians and visitors traveling to and from the Mountain State.”

The funding was awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
