Capito, Manchin press DeVos about proposed education budget
Education Secretary Betsy DeVos sat before the Senate Subcommittee Tuesday to answer question's about President Trump's budget proposal.
The administration put forward a $59 billion education budget for the upcoming fiscal year, which is a $9 billion reduction from the 2017 continuing resolution.
Both Senators Joe Manchin and Shelley Moore Capito pressed DeVos about how budget cuts would affect West Virginia's students.
"I'm very concerned because West Virginia State's Upward Bound program, that's been in existence for 50 years, has been knocked out because of a clerical error," Senator Capito said. "I asked the Secretary to please relook at this. A clerical error should not disenfranchise hundreds if not thousands of WV students, who if not for Upward Bound, would not have the aspirations to go to college."
The Upward Bound initiative provides projects for high school students who come from lower-income families, or who's parents don't have bachelor's degrees.
The 21st Century Community learning centers provides academic support during non-school hours for students at high-poverty and low-performing institutions.
