CLARKSBURG, W.V.a. - Robo-calls are receiving renewed attention in Congress. This week, Senator Shelly Moore Capito and her colleagues are taking steps to crack down on scammers who prey on consumers’ phones. Under bipartisan legislation, called the TRACED Act, the U.S. government would gain more power to increase fines for scammers, while prodding phone carriers to improve their technology so that consumers can more easily figure out if calls are real or spam.
"We passed out of committee, it hasn't passed the full Senate yet. A bill that will help catch the scammers, increase the penalties for scamming like that, it will encourage the FCC within the year to be very aggressive with this. It's very complicated because this is all done by computer based algorithm that dial out," said Sen. Shelley Moore Capito(R-W.V.a.)
Senator Capito said the TRACED Act is a good sign that Congress is moving legislation closer to crossing the finish line.
