U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito announced that West Virginia will receive nearly $200 million from the newly created Rural Health Transformation Program, part of the Working Families Tax Cuts Act, commonly called the One Big Beautiful Bill.

The funding is intended to strengthen rural health systems and expand access to care in communities across the state.

As a member of Senate Republican leadership and chair of the Labor-HHS Appropriations Subcommittee, Senator Capito helped craft the program and secure the investment.

She said the program represents the largest federal investment in rural health care in U.S. history and is designed to drive system-wide changes that improve affordability, access and long-term sustainability.

The Rural Health Transformation Program, which I was proud to help create, makes the largest federal investment in rural health care in American history.

Through innovative system-wide changes that empower states, the program stands to strengthen rural communities in West Virginia and lead to a more sustainable health care future. I look forward to seeing how our state will benefit from this historic funding.

Officials say the funding will support a range of state-led initiatives, including recruiting and retaining providers in rural and shortage areas, training on new technology to expand access and telehealth, and pilot projects that test innovative models of care that improve outcomes and value. The program also prioritizes expanding substance abuse treatment and mental health services in underserved communities.

Senator Capito and her staff plan to work with West Virginia health leaders, hospitals and community providers to identify projects and investments that maximize the impact of the funding. State leaders and local providers will be encouraged to propose programs that address workforce gaps, modernize service delivery and improve care coordination for rural residents.

The announcement underscores a broader Republican focus on affordability and raising standards of living through targeted federal investments. West Virginia officials say the Rural Health Transformation Program offers a major opportunity to shore up rural health infrastructure and improve health outcomes over the long term.
