Sunday marks day 33 of the federal government shutdown, and Congress is still deadlocked on a new funding bill.

US Senator Shelley Moore Capito also addressed the ongoing shutdown.

She believes there has been some movement within the bipartisan talks that have taken place and says they are rapidly working toward getting that critical vote needed to re-open the government, restore SNAP benefits, and pay federal employees.

“It’s a road to nowhere. It’s actually more miserable now than I can ever remember it in terms of the impacts on individuals, on people who work for the government, on people who rely on services from the government. It is a total disservice to them.”

“[Senator]Josh Hawley from Missouri has a bill that would fund only solely fund SNAP benefits. Doesn’t fund any other aspects. So, there’s a there’s an issue of picking winners and losers here, but I am a co-sponsor of that bill.”

Capito says Republicans need at least five Democrats to vote in favor of reopening the government to overcome the Senate’s 60 vote rule, known as the filibuster.

In a Truth Social post, President Trump urged Senate Republicans to eliminate the filibuster in order to end the shutdown without Democratic votes.

It is not clear at this time if Senate Republicans will do so.
