U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito and other lawmakers are introducing a bill to prevent illegal immigrants from receiving commercial driver’s licenses.
The bill would create new criminal and civil penalties for illegal immigrants who obtain or use a CDL. Penalties would apply in Democrat-led states that issue CDLs to illegal immigrants.
Known as Dalilah’s Law Act, the bill follows President Donald Trump’s call on Congress to take action against what he calls unvetted and untrained illegal immigrant commercial drivers.
The bill is named after Dalilah Coleman, who suffered life-altering injuries following a multi-car pileup caused by an illegal immigrant driving a commercial 18-wheeler in California.
“Commercial drivers carry an enormous responsibility, and there must be clear, consistent standards for those allowed behind the wheel,” Capito said.
