Washington, DC – U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced $189,561 for an opioid-impacted family support program at Northern Community College in Wheeling. This funding was made available through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
“The opioid epidemic continues to ravage West Virginia as we simultaneously face the COVID-19 pandemic, putting an incredible strain on those impacted by these two health crises,” said Senator Manchin. “Last week I introduced the Crisis Care Improvement and Suicide Prevention Act to help improve crisis care services that are in high demand for those with substance use disorder and those affected by this virus. This funding for Northern Community College will assist their opioid-impacted family support program, and I look forward to seeing the positive impact this funding will make for those in need during this difficult time. We must prioritize addressing the opioid epidemic to ensure our future generations do not face the same crisis.”

Despite the added challenges, we must be able to provide the relief West Virginians need when they need it the most. On Tuesday, I spoke in the Senate floor about this issue and several ways we can work together to stop the flow of illicit drugs into our state as we battle coronavirus. Support for programs like this at Northern Community College is essential to our relief efforts. I will continue to advocate for additional funding to curb the opioid crisis in our state,” said Senator Capito.
