WHEELING, W.Va. — United States Senator Shelley Moore Capito visited Wheeling on Tuesday afternoon, and she brought a special guest with her.

She was accompanied by NASA Astronaut Peggy Whitson on a visit to Madison Elementary School. Whitson is the first woman to ever command the International Space Station, among many other accomplishments.

The two were speaking to students about building their self-confidence and leadership skills through Capito's West Virginia Girls Rise Up Program.

"We're inspiring, we hope, the next generation of girls to do space exploration or be in public service,” Capito said. “I'm the first woman senator [from West Virginia]; Peggy has done a lot of things first for women in space leadership.”

“Encourage young people to find what their passion is and then really work hard,” Whitson said. “Nothing is going to be handed to anybody on a silver platter, you have to work for your dreams, but it's all worth it."

They are encouraging women to never stop chasing their dreams.
