Senator Shelley Moore Capito addressed the DHS shutdown Thursday as Senators are under pressure to resolve the shutdown by the end of the week.
The cost of flying is rising, and wait times are growing longer due to the ongoing conflict with Iran and the DHS shutdown.
Despite a two-week recession scheduled for Senators, Capito says she does not believe they will be leaving until the issues are resolved.
She also addressed the local effects the shutdown has on the West Virginia International Yeager Airport.
“But nobody should be expected to go without a paycheck for three different paychecks, and that’s what they’re looking at,” Senator Capito said. “And I know that the airport folks are trying to help with gas cards and other things, but that shouldn’t have to be. We need to settle this. And we had a negotiated settlement 41 days ago, but the Democrats walked away from it. And so we’re now on day 41, and it’s very frustrating.”
Senate Majority Leader John Thune, along with Capito, has also not ruled out delaying the Senate’s break if the shutdown is not resolved.
