WASHINGTON, D.C. (WOWK) — U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) has put her full support behind Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s (R-Ala.) amendment to the SAVE Act to ban transgender athletes from participating in female sports.
“To me, this is simply an issue of fairness. It’s, it’s, it’s very simple. It’s not an easy concept,” she said Friday.
The latest version of the SAVE Act has been on the Senate floor since Tuesday. 310 amendments have been filed so far.
The SAVE America Act aims to require REAL ID, a passport or a birth certificate as proof of citizenship to register to vote.
Senator Tuberville’s amendment proposes to alter the federal education code to prohibit public schools from allowing “a person whose sex is male to participate in an athletic program or activity that is designated for women or girls.” It later specifies that “sex shall be recognized based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.”
On Thursday, Capito said that Senate Republicans did not have the 60 votes to bypass the ongoing filibuster.
“In the past, I signed a letter saying that I would not break the filibuster, and I intend to stay with that. But, I don’t think we’re going to get to that point on this bill as to whether we vote on that or not,” she said.
Capito explained her support for Tuberville’s amendment, stating that, “biological males in women’s sports, gender mutilation, mail-in balloting. These are issues that are important to the American people. There are issues that we’ve tried to work on in the past, but they’re extremely important to President Trump.”
