WASHINGTON, D.C.  — Senator Shelley Moore Capito and Senator Tom Udall introduced a Senate Resolution on Thursday in support of MADD’s first-ever National Day of Remembrance for victims and survivors of drunk and drugged driving and underage drinking.

“Senator Capito continues to be a leader in the fight against drunk driving,” said MADD National President Colleen Sheehey-Church. “As a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Capito sponsored legislation to authorize federal research critical to eliminating drunk driving in our nation.”  The Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety, or DADSS, was recently included in the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act (FAST Act).

The Senate Resolution recognizes and remembers the hundreds of thousands of drunk driving victims across the country. As part of MADD’s 35th anniversary, the organization hosted the first-of-its-kind National Day of Remembrance on December 3rd. The day honored those who have been killed or injured in drunk or drugged driving crashes or as a result of underage drinking consequences; as well as those who have been emotionally devastated by these violent and preventable crimes.

Events took place in cities across the country and locally in Charleston, W.V. and Wheeling, W.V.  In 2014, almost 10,000 people were killed in the United States as a result of drunk driving.

“I am proud to work with MADD to honor the victims of drunk and drugged driving,” said Senator Capito. “Driving under the influence is a preventable crime, and we must do everything in our power to create a future where there are fewer DUI victims. I look forward to continuing working with MADD to eliminate drunk driving and save lives.”
