Senator Capito has reintroduced a bipartisan artificial intelligence bill to the Senate.

The ‘VET AI Act’ directs the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to develop guidelines for AI developers to provide assurance and verification of how their AI systems are developed and tested.

Currently, AI companies can make claims about how they train, conduct safety exercises, and carry out risk management on their AI models without any independent verification, Capito says.

The Validation and Evaluation for Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (VET AI) Act would create a pathway for independent evaluators to work with companies as a neutral third-party to verify that their development, testing and use of AI is within the established guardrails.

“The VET AI Act is a commonsense bill that will allow for a voluntary set of guidelines for AI, which will only help the development of systems that choose to adopt them,” said Capito.

The bill will also establish an advisory committee to review the criteria and look at considerations for data privacy protections against potential harm to individuals from an AI system.
