Senator Shelley Moore Capito is leading the West Virginia Congressional Delegation in calling for immediate federal assistance following the devastating flash floods that struck Marion and Ohio counties on June 14.
In a letter sent today to President Donald J. Trump and FEMA Acting Regional Administrator Lilian Hutchinson, the delegation urged swift approval of Governor Patrick Morrisey’s request for a Major Disaster Declaration. The letter was signed by Senator Capito, Senator Jim Justice, Representative Carol Miller, and Representative Riley Moore.
The June 14 flash floods caused widespread damage across communities in northern West Virginia. Torrential rainfall led to fast-rising waters, destroying homes, damaging infrastructure, and displacing families. Landslides and mudslides further impacted the area, making recovery efforts urgent and complex.
Governor Morrisey submitted the formal disaster request on June 20 under the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act. The request seeks federal support through FEMA’s Individual Assistance (IA) and Public Assistance (PA) Programs to help residents and local governments recover and rebuild.
Senator Capito posted the following statement on social media:
The West Virginia delegation stands in strong support of the governor’s Major Disaster Declaration request to @POTUS. The severe storms in our state on June 14th resulted in widespread damage across Marion and Ohio counties. This is an essential step to unlock vital federal resources to support those West Virginians impacted on June 14th in their time of need.”
