Students at Southside Elementary School in Huntington got a chance to meet some of West Virginia’s state leaders.
Several state leaders, including U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito and Jim Justice, were in attendance.
They all gathered at the elementary school to read to the students as a part of a literacy initiative. They read “Little Red and Big, Bad Fred” by West Virginia author Ashley Belote.
Senator Capito said that being in the classroom with the next generation of leaders gives her hope.
“There’s no better way to feel hopeful of the future than to get in a classroom with a bunch of West Virginia students. But what I see is a lot of enthusiasm, great teachers, discipline in the classroom,” Capito said. “Every child is a storyteller, and I try to listen.”
State Treasurer Larry Pack was one of the readers in attendance, and he commended the students’ ambition.
“The children are so bright. They want to learn. The group we were with, they’re all readers. They want to be policemen, they want to be teachers, they want to be doctors,” Pack said. “We need to continue to support our public schools continue to do everything we can to make sure they get the best education that we can give them.”
After the reading, the leaders took questions from some of the students about their careers. Following the questions, the students helped celebrate Baby Dog’s early birthday.
