WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) joined first lady Melania Trump at the White House today to recognize International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month. As West Virginia’s first female United States Senator, Senator Capito has focused on empowering young women through her West Virginia Girls Rise Up program.

“As the mother of a daughter, and a grandmother to three girls, I believe we must recognize the power of women every day, including International Women’s Day. I was honored to join first lady Melania Trump at the White House to celebrate this important occasion, and I look forward to working together to promote policies that empower women here in America and around the world,” said Senator Capito.

“When I was elected as West Virginia’s first female United States Senator, I knew I had a responsibility to be a positive role model and inspire the next generation of female leaders. I created the West Virginia Girls Rise Up program to empower young women through education, fitness and confidence building, and I am incredibly proud of the impact this program has had on West Virginia’s girls,” Senator Capito added.
