CHARLESTON, W.Va. — U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced that the City of Charleston will receive $1,000,000 and the City of Huntington will receive $4,000 through the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Byrne Discretionary Community Project Funding. This funding was made available through several Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) requests made by Senator Capito. In total, Senator Capito secured $241,135,000 in direct spending measures for initiatives and projects across West Virginia through the Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 appropriations omnibus package.

“This is fantastic news for Charleston and Huntington, and will help fulfil important needs in both cities,” Senator Capito said. “The establishment of Charleston’s first Crisis Intervention Team will provide increased availability of emergency mental health services throughout the city, assisting West Virginians when they need it the most. Providing the Huntington Police Department with consistent access to a vehicle lift will help investigators in doing their jobs safely, and perform necessary inspections. The leaders of both cities expressed the need for this support, and I was proud to advocate for these projects through my position on the Appropriations Committee and deliver results.”

Individual awards listed below:

  • $1,000,000 for the City of Charleston: This funding will establish the city’s first Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) to meet the growing need for solutions to assist individuals with mental illness or substance use disorder in the community.
  • $4,000 for the Huntington Police Department: This funding will provide a Hydraulic Vehicle Lift for investigators to appropriately document all sides of a vehicle and collect trace evidence safely while doing so in a secure facility ensuring the chain-of-custody is strong.
