WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced funding from the U.S. Departments of Justice (DOJ), Energy (DOE), Labor (DOL), and Transportation (DOT), as well as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the National Credit Union Administration’s Community Development Revolving Loan Fund (CDRLF) to support public safety, energy projects, workforce development and worker safety, firefighter assistance, help for credit unions, and fellowship support in West Virginia.

DOJ FUNDING: Senator Capito secured funding from DOJ for programs that aim to prevent crime and assist local law enforcement agencies purchase necessary equipment to keep West Virginians safe.

“I am proud to deliver resources that aim to help West Virginians stay on the right path and away from crime so that they can pursue successful careers and support their families,” Senator Capito said. “I am also happy to see funding go to local police departments and sheriffs’ offices across our state that will help them acquire the tools they need to serve our communities and keep them safe.”

DOE FUNDING: Senator Capito, a lead negotiator of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), also announced funding from the DOE to the West Virginia Office of Energy to modernize the state’s electric grid.

“As I helped negotiate and craft the IIJA, support for West Virginia’s infrastructure was always top of mind,” Senator Capito said. “This funding from DOE has the potential to modernize West Virginia’s electric grid for the future, which can help more efficiently and securely deliver and store electricity for our residents.”

DOL FUNDING: Senator Capito, also announced funding from the DOL to support safety education for West Virginia miners and resources that can help former incarcerated individuals rejoin the workforce.

“West Virginia has a proud tradition of being an energy-generating state. I have long worked to secure resources that will help keep miners safe as they do incredible work to powering our state and our country,” Senator Capito said. “I am also happy to deliver the support that will help West Virginians get back into the workforce after difficult times and help them reach their full potential.”

AFG FUNDING: As a member of the Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, Senator Capito secured funding from FEMA for two West Virginia fire departments. The grants were awarded through FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program and will support local fire departments and first responders.

“Through my role on the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, I have consistently worked to secure resources for our volunteer firefighters. These brave men and women are the first to run into harm’s way in order to keep communities and families safe and I am happy to have advocated for the resources that provide them the tools they need to save lives,” Senator Capito said.

  • $564,733 in DOJ funding to WVU (Morgantown, W.Va.) to support a research project aiming to enhance forensic evidence gathering at gun crime scenes.
  • $473,330 in DOJ funding to the West Virginia State Police (South Charleston, W.Va.) to support the West Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force program.
  • $278,730 in DOJ funding to Star City, W.Va. to support Project Saratoga Sandman as part of a larger rural and small department violent crime reduction program.
  • $150,000 in DOJ funding to the City of Huntington, W.Va. to support the Huntington police Department’s “Blue Lights the Way Home” project.
  • $48,026 in DOJ funding to GO33 Justice and Community Services (Charleston, W.Va. to support sexual abuse prevention and response in state correctional facilities.
  • $16,829 in DOJ funding to Wyoming County (Pineville, W.Va.) to support the purchase of a news police cruiser.
  • $16,565 in DOJ funding to the Mercer County Commission (Princeton, W.Va.) to support the sheriff and his deputies in reconstructing crime scenes and reenacting automobile accidents.
  • $15,650 in DOJ funding to the City of Clarksburg, W.Va. to support the purchase of bikes and e-bikes for faster response by officers where other vehicles otherwise would not be viable.
  • $15,650 in DOJ funding to Randolph County (Elkins, W.Va.) to support the purchase of law enforcement firearm accessories.
  • $15,257 in DOJ funding to the Berkeley County Commission (Martinsburg, W.Va.) to support the purchase of equipment for Berkeley County Court Marshals.
  • $14,536 in DOJ funding to the City of Morgantown, W.Va. to support the purchase of ballistic vests and body armor plates for officers.
  • $12,311 in DOJ funding to Fayette County (Fayetteville, W.Va.) to support the purchase of office equipment, K9 unit equipment, and field equipment of officers.
  • $10,346 in DOJ funding to the City of Elkins, W.Va. to support the purchase of a K9 unit capable of detecting illicit substances to fight illegal drug trafficking.

  • $3,719,191 in combined DOL-and-DOJ funding to Workforce West Virginia (Charleston, W.Va.) to support programs former incarcerated individuals rejoin the workforce.
  • $100,657 in DOL funding to the West Virginia Office of Miners Health and Safety Training (Charleston, W.Va.) to help support education of miners working at surface and underground coal and metal and nonmetal mines.
  • $100,657 in DOL funding to WVU (Morgantown, W.Va.) to provide emergency prevention and preparedness training to coal miners and coal mine operators in mine rescue training and dry chemical fire training to respond to emergencies involving fire in underground coal mines.
