WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) issued the following statement congratulating Emma Shannon Casey of Charleston for being selected as West Virginia’s 2015 Cherry Blossom Princess:

“As a member of the Pi Alpha Kappa Cherry Blossom Princess Sorority and co-chair of this year’s Cherry Blossom Princess Program, I am honored to congratulate Emma Shannon Casey for being named West Virginia’s Cherry Blossom Princess for 2015. The educational, leadership and cultural activities the Cherry Blossom Princess Program offers are so valuable. I am confident Emma will have a wonderful experience and make West Virginia proud.”

Senator Capito is a former West Virginia Cherry Blossom Princess. In 2001, she became the first former Princess elected to serve in the United States Congress.

The Cherry Blossom Festival Princess Program is a week-long cultural and educational opportunity for young women from across the United States and around the world. Chosen to represent the 50 states, five territories, the District of Columbia and the international embassy community, women between the ages of 19 and 24 are selected for their leadership, academic achievements and interest in social, civic, community and world affairs.

Emma Shannon Casey is the daughter of Shawn and Sarah Casey of Charleston, West Virginia. She was born and raised in Charleston and graduated from Charleston Catholic High School in 2012. Emma is currently a junior at the University of Kentucky studying finance and economics. Emma is an active member of the Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta and served as 2014 Ritual Chair. After graduation next spring, Emma intends to pursue a career in corporate law. In her free time, Emma enjoys traveling, being outdoors, reading and listening to music.
