WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced $855,959 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to Community Health Systems in Beckley. This funding will be used for the Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education (THCGME) Program, which supports primary care, medical and dental residency programs.

“Primary care facilities provide critical services to our communities. From checkups and physicals, to bloodwork and screenings, the people of our state rely on these services to keep themselves and their families healthy. I’m glad to see this funding going to Beckley for the maintenance of primary care resident positions at Community Health Systems. I’ll continue to use my role on the Senate Appropriations Committee to give our primary care providers the resources they need to keep West Virginians healthy,” Senator Capito said.

“Expanding our healthcare workforce is critical to ensuring every West Virginian has access to quality, affordable healthcare, especially as we continue to see a surge in COVID-19 cases across the state. I am pleased HHS is investing in the Graduate Medical Education (GME) Program in Beckley that supports the training and further education of medical and dental residents in the region. As a member of Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue to advocate for funding to support a robust health workforce in the Mountain State,” Senator Manchin said.
