Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced $98,500 from the Economic Development Administration (EDA) for the Mingo County Redevelopment Authority to support the completion of the Air Transportation Park in Mingo County.

“The EDA continues to be a key partner in West Virginia’s economic growth,” Senator Capito said. “The people of West Virginia are incredibly diligent, hardworking, and want to make their communities better, making our state a great fit for EDA investments. This funding will support future developments at the Air Transportation Park in Mingo County that will promote opportunity for West Virginians. Moving forward, we must continue to work together and develop solutions that give our citizens the tools they need to be successful. Spurring economic growth and creating opportunity for West Virginians has always been a top priority of mine, and I look forward to continuing to work with the EDA and community leaders to create a better West Virginia.”

“Air travel is essential to expanding West Virginia’s tourism industry and giving West Virginians access to other areas of the country, especially in southern West Virginia. As a pilot myself, I’ve flown into the Mingo County Airport and have seen the potential for the area with the completion of the airport. I look forward to seeing the completed airport and the positive effects it will have on the surrounding area. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue to fight for funding that encourages economic development in West Virginia,” said Senator Manchin.

“The master plan will more clearly define our long term vision and guide future development at our state-of-the-art Air Transportation Park. We’re thankful to the U.S. EDA and to our Congressional representatives for approving and supporting this important initiative, and we’re confident that, coupled with our most recent Aero-Ready certification, the master plan will foster the opportunity to attract aviation and aerospace companies to Mingo County, creating high-skilled jobs that utilize the same work ethic, precision and technical skills of our former coal miners,” said Leasha Johnson, Executive Director of the Mingo County Redevelopment Authority.
