CHARLESTON, W.Va. – U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced $1,152,350 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for four research projects across West Virginia.

“As we continue to work toward maintaining healthy communities in West Virginia, I am thrilled to see this funding headed to our state,” Senator Capito said. “These grants will allow for expanded research in areas such as cancer, therapeutics, and more that could lead to breakthrough discoveries. This funding is ultimately aimed at improving the lives of West Virginians and keeping our residents healthy.”

“West Virginia has become a hub for critical research, leading to important strides in cancer research, chemistry and more. I am pleased HHS is investing in four research projects across the Mountain State,” Senator Manchin said. “I look forward to seeing the impact of these projects and I will continue to advocate for funding to make sure research projects succeed right here in West Virginia.”

  • Marshall University: Capsaicin and small cell lung cancer therapy – $444,000

  • Invibragen Inc.: Improved Methods and Commercialization of Native Mass Spectrometry by Capillary Vibrating Sharp-edge Spray Ionization (cVSSI) – $256,452

  • West Virginia University: Therapeutic modulation of tissue nonspecific alkaline phosphatase activity in acute inflammation and sepsis – $228,000

  • Wright World Scientific: Mouse Home Cage Health Monitoring Using Virtual Cage Inspection and a Digital Health Biomarker – $223,898
