WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) announced today that seven volunteer fire departments in West Virginia will receive a total of $918,751 under the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program. The funds will go toward operations and safety, and can be used to purchase training and protective gear and equipment for wellness and fitness, as well as to make health and safety improvements to stations and facilities.

“These grants will ensure that the brave men and women who keep West Virginia’s communities and families safe have the equipment and resources they need. Our local firefighters voluntarily risk their lives to ensure our protection, and we must continue to provide the support they deserve,” said Senator Capito.

“Our first responders in West Virginia sacrifice so much to protect our families and our homes,” said Senator Manchin, who has worked with the volunteer rescue squad in Marion County. “These grants help make sure our local fire departments have access to the necessary equipment and training they need to keep our communities safe and secure each and every day.”

A program of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the primary goal of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program is to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and to enhance their ability to protect the public and first responders from fire and related hazards.
