WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) today delivered remarks on the Senate floor where she discussed the economic crisis facing the country due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. During the floorspeech, Senator Capito outlined why House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) legislationthat passed the House last week is not a serious response coronavirus.

“It is appropriate thatCongress should examine the effectiveness of the
CARES Act… as well as the ongoing need for resources beforeconsidering new legislation to aid the nation’s response. But, legislationpassed in response to this crisis should be—as has been in the past—bipartisanand it should be tailored to respond to COVID and the economic problems that ithas caused. Speaker Pelosi’s legislation that passed the House ofRepresentatives on Friday night fails on both of these counts. To the extent, there was bipartisanship on Friday night. It came from the 14 Democrats whovoted against the Speaker’s wish list. And, the bill was certainly not tailoredto help Americans respond to the COVID crisis,” Senator Capito said in her floor speech.

Senator Capito continued
: “The Senate is continuing to hold hearings—we’rehaving them today—to learn more about the current crisis and provide oversight.More importantly, we are listening to the people in our states—and their needsand their wants and their fears and their hopes and dreams. I am confident thatwe will take responsible action to build our economy—together, put people backto work—together, and help keep our families safe and healthy. Together we cando this. Speaker Pelosi’s legislation will not become law, and she already knewthat when she passed it. But, we will continue to press forward to respond asone nation and one people to this unprecedented disaster.”
