WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), Ranking Member of the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee, today met with President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and other senate infrastructure leaders at the White House to discuss the nation’s transportation and infrastructure needs. U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Pete Buttigieg joined the meeting by phone. Ranking Member Capito released the below statement following the meeting:
“As the top Republican on the EPW Committee, one of my main priorities is passing a bipartisan surface transportation reauthorization bill that makes long-term investments in our nation’s roads and bridges, while at the same time driving job creation and economic growth. Today, we had a positive and substantive discussion at the White House with the president, vice president, transportation secretary, and several of my Senate colleagues who are also leaders in this space. During our meeting, we discussed the need to rebuild our nation’s infrastructure, which all Americans want.
“We should be forward leaning when it comes to tackling the transportation needs of today and tomorrow in a way that works for all communities, instead of a one-sized-fits all approach. The EPW Committee has a track record of delivering strong, bipartisan solutions that address a wide variety of our nation’s top infrastructure needs. We agreed during today’s meeting that the process should and can continue this way as we work together to craft this legislation. I am committed to working toward our common goal of addressing the transportation needs of all communities, specifically those in West Virginia, including additional highway capacity, bridge improvements, innovative transportation technologies, and expanding broadband infrastructure.”
