KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. – Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) made stops in Kanawha County celebrating Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) projects that she helped secure.
First, Senator Capito traveled to Clendenin, W.Va. to attend the groundbreaking of the Leatherwood Water Extension alongside Kanawha County Commissioners and other local officials. In Fiscal Year 2022 (FY22), she helped secure a $5,230,000 CDS allocation to make vital upgrades to the city’s infrastructure. Through this project, the water extension will expand services to residents, serving over 100 households and adding 23 fire hydrants with 6 miles of pipes.
“It was great to be in Clendenin today to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Leatherwood Water Extension,” Senator Capito said. “I was proud to help secure federal funding for this project to support the ongoing economic development and overall growth that’s happening here. This process has been a true collaboration, and I look forward to seeing the many benefits it will have on our communities.”
To finish the day, Senator Capito traveled to Dunbar, W.Va. to attend the Kanawha Metro 911 Command dedication ceremony for their new mobile command unit. While there, she delivered remarks and received updates on their recent CDS projects. In Fiscal Year 2026 (FY26), she secured a $720,000 award to enhance the mobile command unit and a $520,000 award for a backup fire truck. This funding, which is a part of today’s dedication ceremony, will increase critical response times and help save lives.
“It was an honor to be in Dunbar to take part in this dedication ceremony,” Senator Capito said. “I was proud to help secure two incredible CDS awards for this project to help equip our community partners in Dunbar and Kanawha County with the resources they need to protect and serve. As a leader on the Senate Appropriations Committee, I remain committed to advocating for the needs of our law enforcement and first responders.”
“On behalf of the residents of Kanawha County, the County Commission would like to thank Senator Capito for her support. We are proud to have worked with her to secure federal funding to ensure the residents have access to clean water and to purchase a new mobile command unit and fire truck. These critical resources, which would not be possible without Senator Capito’s championing of federal funding, will allow us to respond throughout the county to anything from a house fire to a large-scale disaster.” Ben Salango, President of the Kanawha County Commission, said.
