HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), a leader on the Senate Appropriations Committee, traveled to Putnam and Cabell counties where she made stops focused on Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) allocations she helped secure.

First, Senator Capito traveled to Eleanor, W.Va. where she toured the Winfield Locks and Dam, a critical navigation facility on the Kanawha River operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Senator Capito secured a $6.9 million CDS allocation in Fiscal Year 2022 (FY22) and an additional $8 million CDS allocation in Fiscal Year 2024 (FY24) to support facility improvements.

“The Winfield Locks and Dam is a vital component of the Kanawha River navigation system, keeping commerce flowing safely and efficiently,” Senator Capito said. “I’ve been proud to support federal funding over the years to modernize and strengthen this infrastructure to ensure Winfield remains reliable, efficient, and competitive for decades to come. Investing in projects like this means investing in West Virginia workers and our economy, and I was glad to see how these projects are helping to do just that.”

Next, Senator Capito traveled to Huntington, W.Va. where she visited Marshall University’s Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. The first allocation was for $15 million to support the Marshall Medical School Stimulation Center, and the second allocation was for $1.9 million for the Marshall Medical School Center for Informatics and Population Analytics. Both allocations will expand Marshall’s capacity to train healthcare professionals, advance research, and serve communities across West Virginia.

“Marshall University and its outstanding medical program play an integral role in preparing the future doctors of our state, and it is important to me that students and faculty have access to the best resources and facilities,” said Senator Capito. “The investment announcements today represent more than just funding— they represent a strong commitment to the future of health care in West Virginia. They will expand opportunity, strengthen workforce development, and reinforce Marshall’s role as a leader in medical education and research.”

“Senator Capito’s leadership and steadfast support through the appropriations process continue to make a meaningful difference for Marshall University and the people of West Virginia. Her investment in our strategic growth areas — research, workforce development and innovation — amplifies our ability to serve both our state and the nation. We are deeply grateful for her partnership. Through her leadership, Senator Capito continues to open doors and expand opportunities for future generations of West Virginians,” Brad D.
