WASHINGTON, D.C. – Yesterday, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), a member of Senate Republican leadership and a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, joined Fox News Channel’s “The Sunday Briefing.”
HIGHLIGHTS:
ON THE SHUTDOWN’S IMPACTS ON FEDERAL WORKERS AND SERVICE MEMBERS: “What you see as we’re edging up to people missing their paychecks, some people losing their jobs, obviously the intensity is growing here, as it should’ve been on October 1st. I think we will reach a pressure point here, but to me, the simple thing is to reopen the government…in a C.R. that’s been voted for numerous times in the past, very simple till the middle of November…If it’s so obvious that we want our troops to be paid, the simple thing to do is reopen the government in a way that we’ve done many, many times in the past. I’m really pleased that President Trump, and I heard Vice President Vance talking about this this morning, have found the dollars to pay our troops, but there’s a lot of others, the Coast Guard, TSA, and other vital government services that are in peril here. We have low-income people, women and children looking for nutrition programs, SNAP benefits, we could go on and on here. This is not something that should be in political hands like has been with the Schumer Shutdown…when we have so many people that are now wondering how they’re going to pay their car payment, their grocery bill.”
ON ACA PREMIUM SUBSIDIES: “Here’s the irony of what Senator Schumer is saying, numerous Republicans, including myself, have said repeatedly that some of the premium subsidies are absolutely essential. West Virginia has 67,000 people who are on these subsidies who by no other way could afford, in some cases, any kind of insurance. That’s important to me. Many of us have expressed that interest, so the negotiations have already begun. The president has talked about this, the Vice President has talked about this. I think this is totally a political game so Senator Schumer and the Democrats can stiffen their spine and their supporters, but it’s at the expense of so many people. Let’s look at what they’re asking for, $1.5 trillion worth of more spending…So are they going to wait this out until November 1st? We could negotiate this and have an answer by then, but not while the government is closed.”
ON THE ISRAEL-HAMAS PEACE DEAL: “What we’re looking at in the next 24 hours with what’s happening in Israel and Gaza is nothing short of a miracle. I think everybody in that region had a part to play, but certainly President Trump and his team have done a magnificent job and I think we should celebrate those hostages being released.”
