Senator Shelley Moore Capito, said Tuesday, during her weekly press call, that she does not believe Congress needs to pass a War Powers Resolution related to ongoing U.S. military operations in Iran.

Capito said the resolutions currently being discussed in Congress would tie the president’s hands and make it difficult for him to make military decisions in real time.

She also reiterated her support for the president’s actions in Iran, adding that she does not currently consider the United States to be at war with Iran.

“What has happened here is the President gave the Iranians more than enough time to come to the table, to seek diplomacy, even as late as last Tuesday the President at the State of the Union said diplomacy is the preferred route,” Capito said. “And I believe that that was the direction we were going. But, as you see over the weekend, the buildup of nuclear arms, the buildup of the ballistic missiles, the absolute stalling by the Iranian diplomats, I think the President felt like this was the best time to eliminate that threat.”

Capito also said she sympathizes with the six U.S. service members killed as part of the operations in Iran and said that she hopes no additional American lives will be lost in the conflict.
